The programme, in place since 2019, supports co-productions between European producers and international co-producers, providing the awarded project in advanced development stage (whether is fiction, animation or doc) with a co-production grant of € 50,000 - allocated to the European production company - and a series of tailor-made consultancies with experts in various fields of filmmaking.
This year, the TFL Co-Production Fund has been assigned to VIET AND NAM, third feature film (and first full narrative fiction) of the Vietnamese director Truong Minh Quý, whose previous works have been chosen for international film festivals and exhibitions such as Locarno, Berlinale, New York, Clermont-Ferrand, Oberhausen, Rotterdam, Busan and MOMA.
The company benefiting from the grant is Scarlet Visions GmbH based in Munich (Germany) and founded in 2017. Focused on international co-production of arthouse movies, it is creating content mainly in the field of narrative and writer-director cinema, rooting in the belief that every greatness begins with imagination and envisioning.
VIET AND NAM, which will be shot between Vietnam and The Philippines in 16 mm, tells the story of Nam, a young miner who, before leaving Vietnam in a container alongside future migrants, seeks to find the remains of his father, a soldier killed during the civil war.
The film - to be completed in 2023 - is produced by Bradley Liew & Bianca Balbuena (Epicmedia Productions, Inc - Philippines) and Mai Nguyen (Scarlet Visions GmbH, Germany & CineHanoi, Vietnam) and co-produced by Lai Weijie (E&W Films, Singapore), Marie Dubas (Deuxième Ligne Films, France), Lorna Tee & Joost de Vries (An Original Picture, Netherlands) and Stefano Centini (Volvos Film, Taiwan).
The upcoming funding opportunities offered by TorinoFilmLab will open in the next months: the call for applications of the TFL Audience Design Fund - distribution support addressed to European producers and sales agents working on internationally co-produced feature films selected to receive a grant of 45,000 plus customised audience design consultancies - will be open from to 24th October 2022 to 31st January 2023; while the TFL Co-Production Fund will be back in 2023, open call from 23rd January to 30th March.
The TFL Funds, are possible since 2014 thanks to the Creative Europe - MEDIA sub-programme support to International Co-production Funds.
