Biography

Ahmed Abou Zeid was born in Alexandria (Egypt). Between 1988 –1991 he worked as an Assistant Director in Several TV & Cinema Productions in Egypt and then from 1993 to 1996 in Several Independent Films (Long & Short Films) in NY (USA). In 1993 he wrote and directed the documentary “Invalid Dreams” about the life of Egyptian immigrants in New York and in 1995 he wrote and directed the Short fiction film “The White Dove” in Egypt. From 1996 to 2000 he worked as a director in Egyptian Television (The Thematic Channels). Between 1996 and 2002 he published the first article calling for an independent cinema in Egypt, under the title “Alternative Cinema“, wrote many articles on filmmaking and independent cinema in film magazines and wrote the Book “An Egyptian Director From South Lebanon“, about the life and work of the Documentary filmmaker “Nabiha Lotfy“. In 1997 Ahmed wrote and directed the documentary “Engravings on a Ray of Light” about the life and work of the Egyptian film Director “Kamal El-Sheikh”. The Film Participated in the Egyptian TV & Radio Festival 1997… and Torino Film Festival in Italy 2001. In 1999 he wrote and directed the Documentary “El Hawy” (The Street Entertainer) about a group of people who earn their living by performing magical and skill tricks and stunts in the streets of Cairo and the surrounding villages. The Film Participated in The Avizzano Film Festival in Italy and won the Best Documentary Prize. In 2000 he wrote and directed the Documentary “Palestine … 52 years of occupation“ based on an Exhibition of the Artist “Ahmed Nawar”. In 2001 he established, with a group of filmmakers, the first independent production company in Egypt (SEMAT) . In 2003 he wrote and directed the short film “From a Far” about a man visiting his hometown (Alexandria) after long years of living abroad. The film won the first prize for best short film from the National Film Festival in Egypt (year 2004). Between 2003 and 2005 he wrote and directed three documentaries about the Arabs in Chile (Latin America) for Al Jazeera TV channels: “In the Game”, “Being far” and “The other hometown”. In 2005 he established the production company "Collage films" with producer Ihab Ayoub. In 2007 he wrote and directed the feature length film "El Shayateen - The return" (The Devils – The return) with actors ( Sherif mounier, Khaled Zaki, Morad, Dolly Shahin, and Basel Khayat ). Between 2008 and 2009 he wrote and directed two documentaries from the political crime series in Jazeera TV channels ( work in progress ): “King Abdullah of Jordan ( The first )” and “Jordanian Prime Minister Wasfi Al Tal”. In 2010 he wrote the screenplay for the feature film “Halawet Al Rouh” or “Beautiful Spirit”.
