Matías Piñeiro

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina 1982. He wrote and directed the films “Regarding Buenos Aires” (2016), “The Stolen Man” (2007), “They All Lie” (2009), “Rosalinda” (2010), “Viola” (2012), “The Princess of France” (2014), “Hermia & Helena” (2016) and “Isabella”(2020). For more than ten years, Matías Piñeiro has engaged with the same group of actors and artists conforming a cinematographic family that allows him to work in joy and unity in each of their projects. His last five films are part of an ongoing series called The Shakespeareads focused on the female roles in William Shakespeare’s comedies. From 2000 to 2004, he studied filmmaking at Universidad del cine (Buenos Aires, Argentina) where he later taught filmmaking and film history for six years until he moved to the U.S.A. in 2011 to attend the Radcliffe Institute Fellowship at Harvard University. In 2015, he received from New York University an MFA in Creative Writing in Spanish. He currently teaches filmmaking at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. His films have been screened in film festivals such as Berlinale, Toronto Film Festival, New York Film Festival, Locarno Film Festival, Rotterdam Film Festival, San Sebastian Film Festival, among others, and in museums such as Centre George Pompidu (Paris, France), Tate Modern (London, UK), Museo Reina Sofía (Madrid, Spain), MoMA (New York, USA), Museum of Moving Image (New York, USA), Malba (Buenos Aires, Argentina). Retrospectives of his works have taken place in Jeu de Paume-Musée du Louvre (Paris, France), Film Society of Lincoln Center (New York, USA), Cineteca Nacional (Mexico City, Mexico), Arsenal Kino (Berlin, Germany), Filmoteca Española (Madrid, Spain), Harvard Film Archives (Cambridge, USA), Cinematek (Brussels, Belgium), Athené Francais (Tokyo, Japan), among others. He teaches filmmaking at Pratt Institute (New York - USA), Le Fresnoy - Studio national des arts contemporains (Tourcoin, France) and Elías Querejeta Zine Escola (San Sebastian, Spain). And he has given lectures and seminars on cinema at California Institute of the Arts (Valencia, USA), Massachusetts School of Art and Design (Boston, USA), Universidad Autónoma de Mexico (Mexico City, Mexico), Deutsche Film und Fernsehakademie Berlin (Berlin, Germany), Universidad Torcuato Di Tella (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Tokyo Film School (Tokyo, Japan), Arteleku (San Sebastian, Spain), Centro de Cultura Digital (Mexico City, Mexico), among others. Matías Piñeiro is also a film programmer. He is part of the selection committee at Punto de Vista Film Festival, an international documentary film festival in Spain and programs a series on contemporary Latin American films at Anthology Film Archives in New York. At present, Matías Piñeiro is developing three film projects: “Sycorax” and “Ariel”, both projects co-directed with Galician filmmaker and friend Lois Patiño, based on William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” and “Isabella”, a feature film based on William Shakespeare’s “Measure for Measure”.
