Maura was born in Bolzano, Italy. After graduating in literature in Bologna and Paris, she studied dramaturgy and screenplay in Buenos Aires. With her documentaries exploring the limit between fiction and non fiction she was awarded twice in the Torino Film Festival and in several others, receiving the Special Jury Mention of the Premio Solinas for the Best Documentary Script and a nomination at the Italian David di Donatello. The screenplay of Hogar (int. title: Maternal), her first fiction film, was one of the ten selected projects of the Berlinale Script Station 2015. In 2016 it won the ARTE International Prize at the 64. San Sebastian Film Festival as well as the Special Jury Mention for the Best Project. In 2019 Maternal had its première in the International Competition of the 72. Locarno Film Festival, winning four awards. Since then it received more than twenty prizes, including Best Film, Best Acting, FIPRESCI and Public Award, being selected in more than seventy festivals worldwide, including BFI London, Busan, Moscow, Chicago, Festa del cinema di Roma, Guadalajara, Mar del Plata, El Cairo and AFI Los Angeles. It has been sold in various countries and nominated Best Film of the Week by the French press. In 2020 Maura received the Kering-Festival de Cannes Women in Motion Young Talent Award.
