Goodnight Girl

After a friend’s funeral takes a queer turn, four estranged smalltown misfits struggle to reconcile.

synopsis

Courtney Gallagher is dead, and her funeral is about to be a battlefield. Her once-closest friends – gay undertaker Abeo, trans punk Manon, Catholic lesbian influencer Jude, and drag star Dominique – return to their small Irish hometown, St. Brigid’s, to discover that Courtney’s family plans to bury her as a man, erasing her identity as a transgender woman. Desperate to save Courtney’s memory, the friends band together to try to steal her coffin. A ferocious clash ignites between Courtney’s two families: her biological one, and the one she built for herself. Her conservative parents, Elaine and Fergal, fight to stop the friends sharing the truth at every turn. With a local priest, neighbours, and Courtney’s football star brother Fionn to convince, this gang has their work cut out. Time is running out – and this ragtag crew must find a way to save Courtney’s legacy without tearing each other apart. Can they lay the past to rest, or will their stubbornness doom this family forever?

Director’statement

Goodnight Girl takes place in a world much like our own – except way more extreme. Colours, costumes and lighting are heightened to show the stark contrast between the two worlds: dull vs vibrant, old vs modern. This is a high energy, fast-paced show centred on four charming individuals always doing what they think is right – even when totally misguided. We want the audience to navigate our world like a member of these families and examine both perspectives of Courtney’s burial to understand the differing mindsets behind their actions. We want to create a sense of home for those that have struggled to be accepted by their own family and give them somewhere where they see themselves. Although the show deals with real grief and tragedy, it also highlights the humour, connections, and trouble that your chosen family can get you into. We want to interrogate the notions society has about gender, queerness, and family – and tell a surprising, touching, and darkly funny story along the way!
