6 #TFLfilms at the 42nd Torino Film Festival

Hot off the press: the selection of the upcoming Turin-based film festival has been announced and we are excited to spot different titles that participated in the TorinoFilmLab between 2019 and 2024, among the various sections. Let’s go through them.

INTERNATIONAL FEATURES COMPETITION


HOLY ROSITA
by Wannes Destoop (TFL Next 2020)
(Belgium / 90’) – this will be its international premiere after the screening at Film Festival Oostende 2024

Rosita is a cheerful woman with an eager desire to have children. Those around her think it is irresponsible, because she can barely take care of herself. When Rosita does become pregnant, she decides to keep it a secret.

NINA by Andrea Jaurrieta (FeatureLab 2021)
(Spain / 104’) – International premiere at Málaga Film Festival 2024

Nina decides to return to the seaside town where she grew up, with a shotgun in her bag and a goal: to take revenge on Pedro, a famous writer to whom the town now pays homage.

THE BRINK OF DREAMS

In a remote village in southern Egypt, a group of girls rebel by forming an all-female street theater troupe. They dream of becoming actresses, dancers and singers, challenging their families and villagers with their unexpected performances. Shot over four years, The Brink of Dreams follows them from childhood to womanhood, facing the most crucial choices of their lives.

In a crocodile park Johan lives with Mama's overprotection. When Johan meets Arumi, their quiet life becomes shaken. With Arumi's pregnancy, it becomes more complicated.

SHAMBHALA by Min Bahadur Bham (FeatureLab 2019)
(Nepal, France, Norway, Hong Kong, Turkey, Taiwan, USA, Qatar / 150’) – International premiere at Berlinale 2024

In a Himalayan polyandrous village in Nepal, pregnant Pema faces scrutiny as her first husband; Tashi vanishes on the trade to Lhasa. Accompanied by her de facto husband, monk, Karma, she embarks on a journey to find him, evolving her quest into self-discovery and liberation.

THE VILLAGE NEXT TO PARADISE by Mo Harawe (ScriptLab 2022)
(France, Austria, Germany, Somalia / 133’) – International premiere at Cannes 2024 | Un Certain Regard

The film follows a Somali family and their daily struggles during a scorching hot summer.
