TorinoFilmLab’s journey towards sustainability vol. II

We believe it’s time to dedicate ourselves to taking better care of our environment. Can we make a change?

At TorinoFilmLab, we began this journey back in 2019 with the introduction of the White Mirror and the Green Filming Awards, supporting filmmakers who share our values. In 2022, we launched Green Film Lab, the TFL programme dedicated to raising awareness about making audiovisual productions greener, and we also incorporated green consultancies and masterclasses into our main programmes, such as FeatureLab and ScriptLab, focusing on both production and climate storytelling. In 2024, we launched the Green Production Lab to foster connections between the cinema and environmental sectors, allowing them to learn and improve from one another.

Our actions impact the environment every day, so even the smallest steps count.
Last year, we took a significant step forward by committing to a three-year sustainability improvement plan to certify the TFL Meeting Event aligned with ISO 20121, an international standard that helps manage the social, economic, and environmental impact of events.

We have set standards for ourselves through consultation with experts who guided us in achieving our ecological, economic, ethical, and social goals. Examples include prioritizing event venues within walking distance, reducing material production, creating gadgets from recycled materials, and negotiating with hotels to avoid plastic cups, bottles, and single-use products - and this is just the beginning.

Our goal is not only to foster sustainability but also to make TFL a hub for conversations this central topic with suppliers, buyers, and staff.

We donate any excess food from the event meals to Asilo Notturno Umberto I. Their mission is to provide temporary, free overnight shelter to individuals of any age, nationality, or religion, offering a safe place, whether they are unemployed, residents, or passing through the city.
We collaborate with Ideazione to realise settings and promotional materials from recycled paper, certified non-toxic pigments and repurposed supports, paying a close attention to the entire process. A similar circular approach is adopted by Sartoria Gelso, part of the Patchanka social cooperative, which helps us produce our merchandise using re-purposed TFL materials. Additionally, they work with women in the female department of Turin's prison, empowering them by providing professional career opportunities.

These are just a few of the actions we are taking to reduce the impact of the TFL Meeting Event. Each year, we introduce new initiatives to uphold our values and integrate them consistently into our work.

We will fund AsFo La Chiara, a local association based in Usseglio (TO), to create two small nurseries of native species aimed at preserving biodiversity.

We asked Laboratorio Zanzara, a social cooperative in Turin, to create the artwork for the upcoming edition. They work with educators and professionals to support individuals with mental health issues by helping them develop skills to create and sell quality work, while also promoting creative expression and cultural integration.

We will also be using an emissions calculator, because we cannot improve if we don’t first measure ourselves!

TFL pays attention to how shifts in the world are reflected in the narratives of the films and TV shows we cherish. We will keep suggesting initiatives and activities that meet these changing demands, relying on the support of our TFL community.

We share our values with you because we know you care. Will you help us?
